This survey is intended to determine how well 3rd graders should be able to spell simple words.
The information gathered here will be compare to actual results of The New Iowa Spelling Scale, a study conducted in 1953. It is the only study of its kind available to researchers and curriculum developers.
The results of this survey will be used in an effort to convince a major university such as Saginaw Valley State, Grand Valley State, Michigan State, or University of Detroit-Mercy to secure a federal grant to perform a new, updated spelling study.
Such a study is desperately needed so that researchers can have a baseline upon which to evaluate reading and spelling programs.
