From our research findings about aluminum can recycling, the following consumer attitudes about recycling emerged.

For those who do not always recycle, the issue continues to relate to convenience (e.g., having containers, curbside pickup, nearby recycling centers).

Although the habit of recycling aluminum is moderately strong, attitudes toward doing so are mixed. Specifically, the public is split on the importance of recycling aluminum cans;
over half say it is somewhat to very important (54%). However, a sizable proportion (24%) continues to rate the importance as low or not important at all. The altered question from 2002 shows that over half of people (64%) thought it was somewhat to very important in their purchase decision that beverage containers be recyclable (2002), using the top three box scores.

When asked what governmental (or other macro-level) actions could be taken to spur them to recycle aluminum cans more, respondents agreed most with "increasing the number of recycling centers or containers in the community". A close second, was having more public education programs about the environmental benefits of aluminum can recycling.
