Recent budget votes in the state legislature increase taxes by $5 billion and raise state spending by 6%.  I voted against these tax and spending hikes.  Which choice below best summarizes your views on the state budget?

With a recession already forcing middle class families and small businesses to cut back, it is irresponsible for state government to raise taxes and spending so much.
Tax increases to fund more government programs are necessary to meet the needs of Wisconsinites.

Under the newly-passed state budget bill, property taxes on the average Wisconsin home, which is worth $165,000, will go up over $300 in the next two years.  (If your house is worth more than $165,000, your property tax bill will rise by well over $300.)  How much do you expect this tax hike will affect your family budget?

One of the few places this budget actually makes real spending cuts is in the Department of Corrections.  This budget ends "Truth in Sentencing" and lets violent and nonviolent felons out of prison early as a way to save the state money.  Which choice below best summarizes your views?

If a felon is sentenced to ten years in prison, he should serve ten years in prison. Keeping the public safe ought to be one of state government's top priorities.
Releasing violent and nonviolent felons onto the street earlier than their initial release date is a good way for the state to save money.

The just-passed state budget bill was "balanced" with a combination of tax and borrowing increases, several spending increases and a few spending cuts.  Decisions made in this state budget bill have set up the next state budget bill to start with a deficit of $2 billion.  What should state lawmakers do to address the next budget deficit?

Cut government spending.
Cut taxes to encourage business growth and ease the burden on family budgets.
Increase borrowing again.
Raise taxes again.
Raise government spending again.
