Hawthorn Woods currently uses a Traditional Subdivision Model with lots at a minimum of one acre. Under the Conservation Subdivision Model , homes are clustered on smaller lots to leave more open space but take up the same amount of space as a conventional subdivision. For example, a Traditional Subdivision (left) with 55 homes on two-acre lots would fill a 130 acre site, while a Conservation Model Subdivision (right) with 55 homes on ¾-acre lots would leave more than half of the 130 acre site as natural open space.

The Village of Hawthorn Woods should allow Conservation Model Subdivisions in cases where woodlands, wetlands, or other natural resources are present.
