Professional Educators of Iowa Quick Survey

Text Block:
As many of you know, the state is currently in a financial hardship and it will be a challenge to balance the budget.  In order for this to be possible, cuts will need to be made to the general fund.  Iowa is looking at needing almost $600 million in cuts to balance the budget or taxes may need to be raised.  By the state's constitution Iowa's budget must be balanced. Lawmakers from both parties have shown they have no desire to raise taxes.  Property taxes have been increasing enough the past 8 years and they feel there is no need to add more taxes on Iowans who pay close to the highest income tax in the region.  With the state budget facing cuts some of them will be to education.  Last week Republicans in the state house introduced the Taxpayer First Act (HF1) which is estimated to save the state $600 million over the next three years.  As PEI lobbies, we need to inform our lawmakers where PEI's members stand on the different cuts.  In this survey we have included many of the cuts proposed and all of them that affect education.  We now need your input on the Taxpayer First Act.   The public hearing is Tuesday, January 18 at 6:30 pm.
