Our temperate climate and flat roads make cycling tempting, but Hillsborough County averages more than 85 severe or fatal cycling crashes per year, one of the worst crash rates in the country.  The MPO has teamed up with Hillsborough County, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and the City of Tampa to identify the most critical issues affecting bicycle safety. The Bicycle Safety Action Plan, currently under development, reviews the last five years of bicycle crashes, looking at the most dangerous locations, frequent kinds of collisions, times of day they occur, demographics, and other factors.

Road signs directing bicyclists to ride in the direction of traffic
Posters or billboards educating drivers and bicyclists to look out for each other at driveways and side streets
Posters or billboards educating bicyclists about using lights and reflective clothing at night
Enforce laws for drivers, including passing too close or turning in front of bicyclists
Enforce laws for bicyclists, including use of nighttime lights
