NEW Leadership™ New York (NLNY) is a leader development for undergraduate women.  It is part of the Women’s Leadership Academy at the Center for Women in Government & Civil Society (CWGCS), Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy, University at Albany, State University of New York.

NLNY is designed to encourage, educate and empower college women to engage in leadership and political action.  The program offers participants an intensive six-day residential experience and an opportunity to compete for mini grant awards to implement a program that serves youth on their home campus or in their community.

Program
Participants will take part in training sessions, experiential workshops and fieldtrips to help them explore and develop their own leadership style.  Students will also receive an introduction to women’s history, New York State politics and policymaking, campaign and community organizing, ally building and advocacy skills. Networking and mentoring opportunities and special events will take place throughout the week. Participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement upon successful completion of the program.

Eligibility
NLNY is open to undergraduate students enrolled in any New York State college or university and New York State residents who are enrolled in out-of-state schools. All applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.0 to be considered. Applicants must submit an official copy of their undergraduate transcripts, and a current resume, if available. Twenty to twenty-five participants will be selected for the 2012 program.

CWGCS strongly encourages women from diverse backgrounds—including women of color, LGBTQ women, first generation college students, and returning and international students—to apply to the NEW Leadership™ New York program. (Some scholarship funding has been designated for specific categories by the donors.)

Commitment
Participants will live in the residence halls at the University at Albany from June 6-11 and are required to participate in all NLNY workshops and activities. Completion of this application is acknowledgement and agreement to these requirements.

Cost
NEW Leadership™ is supported by donations from individuals and corporate sponsors. All accepted NEW Leaders will be asked to fundraise $250 in order to offset a percentage of the program cost as well as to give participants an opportunity to strengthen fundraising skills. When accepted, CWGCS will provide a fundraising toolkit.

No one who is accepted will be turned away for inability to pay. A limited number of scholarships are available to strong applicants who are unable to raise the funds and/or obtain sponsorships.

Application deadline has been extended to 11:59 pm on Friday, April 20.
Decisions will be announced by email at the end of April.
