Nominations for Annual Business Achievement Awards
The Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce recognizes the importance of highlighting the outstanding achievements in our business community. In effort to publicly acknowledge the superior efforts of these businesses and individuals, the Chamber of Commerce created its annual Business Achievement Awards Ceremony. Below you will find an outline of the selection and nomination process. We encourage nominations from all of our area citizens as well self-nominations.

Nomination Process 
The voting will be open from February 1st till 5pm on March 1st.
 
To illustrate to the panel of judges how your nominee meets each of the eligibility and award criteria, please include specific and clear descriptions and examples (up to 1000 characters) in order to adequately judge we require more than just a name.  

The Selection Process 
All award nominations are reviewed by a panel of judges.*
 
1.


Business of the Year - Small (1 - 25 employees)
 
This includes full & part time & contract/associates and Home Based Businesses
 
  • This award showcases a business with 1-25 employees
  • Should exemplify a strong community presence (i.e. Membership in charitable organizations, sponsorships, representation on community based boards, and contributes to worthy causes.)
  • Have noteworthy operational success in areas such as: sound business planning, fiscal responsibility and customer service
  • Demonstrates strong business ethics and integrity. Fair play in a competitive market
  • Fosters diversity in the workplace
  • Improves employee skills and career development through education and training programs

Business of the Year - Large (26 employees & over)
 
  • Has lead a community based, socio-economic, political or cultural cause for the betterment of the community at large.
  • Is involved in the community (i.e. membership in charitable organizations, sponsorship of sports teams and or associations, representation on community based boards, and contributes to worthy causes.)
  • Demonstrates responsibility in all business activities-fair play in a competitive environment.
  • High standard of business activity though sound employee relations through benefits programs, profit share programs, formal employee appraisal systems, incentive programs, regular employee celebrations.
  • Committed to safety in the workplace (hours of operation with lost time accidents, safety performance record vs. legislative requirements and/or company goals for safety handling of dangerous products goods or service.)
  • Environmental awareness through the use of environmentally friendly products, recycling programs, adherence to environmental legislation, internal programs developed solely on environmentally friendly merits.
  • National/International market impact through the export of product or service outside Renfrew County, Ontario or Canada.
  • Fosters diversity in the workplace with programs that maximize the potential of all people.
  • Improves employees' skills and career development through education and training programs.

Start Up Superstar (NEW category)
 
  • Recognizes a business that has been operating less than 3 years
  • Presented to an individual(s) with an entrepreneurial character
  • Delivers a product/service/idea/invention with credible potential
  • Created new employment opportunities
  • Impacts and shows commitment to the community
  • May have renovated or built a new facility
  • Commitment to safety in the workplace
  • Has incorporated sound environmental policies and practices in the workplace

Best Community Impact Award (NEW category)
 
  • Presented to an individual or organization that has demonstrated a special impact to the Upper Ottawa Valley
  • Shown a continuing active interest in the welfare of the Upper Ottawa Valley
  • Beautification of the area
  • Improvement of the recreational opportunities
  • Preservation of nature areas and wildlife, historical structures and archival materials.
  • Respect of cultural and socio-economic status of the citizens of the region.
  • Advocate or community booster, fundraiser, volunteer
  • Pro-active when addressing environmental issues
  • Advocacy in areas of social justice, equality, human rights, etc.

  • Presented to an employee, apprentice or trainee who has gone above and beyond the call of duty

  • Presented to an individual or business that demonstrates a commitment to our environment

  • Diversification/value added farming
  • Appropriate animal husbandry practices
  • Recognition by industry standards and evaluation practices of evidence of

Excellence in Construction and Trades 
 
  • Award presented to an individual or business that excels in construction and trades
  • History of training apprentices in one or more skilled trades
  • Supports apprentices by providing learning opportunities, tutoring or coaching (provide example)
  • Participation in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (ie. Taken a coop student in an apprenticeship trade)
  • Could include building, plumbing, roofing, electrical, painting, or engineering
  • Participation in Options Skilled Trades Fair by sponsoring a booth or setting up/judging a skills competition

Professional Services Award

This award is presented to a person or employee team with a professional designation or whose practice is regulated by a provincial, federal or regulatory body. Nominees will be considered from the following professional categories:
  • Legal
  • Accounting
  • Engineering
  • Medical or Dental
  • Financial
Nominees will have has demonstrated sound business practices, leadership, involvement in the Upper Ottawa Valley community and exceptional employee relations. The recipient will have done so in any or all of the following areas:
  • Has lead a community based, socio-economic, political or cultural cause for the betterment of the community at large
  • Is involved in the community (i.e. membership in charitable organizations, sponsorship of sports teams and or associations, representation on community based boards, contributes to worthy causes.
  • Demonstrates responsibility in all business activities-fair play in a competitive environment
  • High standard of business activity
  • Provides benefits programs, profit share programs, formal employee appraisal systems, incentive programs, regular staff celebrations.
  • Committed to safety in the workplace
  • Fosters diversity in the workplace with programs that maximize the potential of all people. Improves employees' skills and career development through education and training programs

Lifetime Business Achievement Award
(not for public nomination/chosen by UOVCC Board of Directors) 
 
This award is not subject to public nomination however the Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce does accept recommendations from the general public. The Award recipient is chosen by the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and can be presented posthumously. The primary criteria to be considered include:
  • Involved in business for a minimum of 25 years.
  • A proven commitment to doing business in the Upper Ottawa Valley.
  • Dedication to employees and the broader community.
  • Demonstration of business leadership and sound business practices. Previous recognition by industry/colleagues/governing body related to business excellence
  • Has shown a clear commitment to the Environment with an emphasis on conservation of our natural resources including the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste within their business
