Every successful business has two things - a great strategic plan, and a strong and effective leader who can make things happen.  But wait a minute ... just because you own a small business doesn't mean you're automatically that leader.

Leaders are made - not born

I've compiled this assessment from the profiles of the thousands of entrepreneurs I've worked with over the past 20+ years to help you understand your own personal leadership style that may be helping, or holding back, the growth of your business.

This is a confidential self-assessment, which means that your information will not be shared with anybody in any way.   Be rigorously honest with yourself.  If you are in doubt about any question, mark it as a "yes".

Let's get started ...

Required
Are you continuously starting new projects?

Things always feel like they're in chaos, just beyond your control.  You are spending more time dabbling than producing.  Your focus is on "what's next" instead of "what's now".
Yes
No

Do you have more ideas than focus?

Nothing gets complete.  You get overwhelmed after the initial "rush" of starting.  What looked like fun in t
he beginning is now becoming a burden of "to do's".

Are your action cycles running in highs and lows?

You either feel energized or drained  - it's one end of the spectrum or the other.  At either end, you are not taking care of yourself.  You jump to every trigger and forget about your priorities.

Do you work too many hours?

You're being driven by fear, or on an "achievement high".  Either way, you can't stop working.  You're way out of balance and getting a smaller and smaller return on your time investment.  You've lost your sense of purpose and have become a "human doing".

Do you find business stressful?

You're stressed and you know you aren't always making the best decisions for your business or for yourself.  You're not managing your staff well, tasks aren't always completed, or completed as well as they could be, and you're missing opportunities.

Yes
No

Do you enjoy making money?

You're so driven by the concept of  "making money" that you are missing opportunities to maximize what you already have.  You're always looking for new money-making schemes, and are unable to let go of an idea you're sure is about to pay off, even when the facts prove you're wrong.

Yes
No
Required
Are you operating on the financial edge?

You don't pay attention to your money.  You're fueling yourself with the fear that you just aren't making enough and you don't want to look at the numbers.  You're fearful and uncomfortable - but it's a familiar feeling.   You want to have a plan to make money,  but you don't know how.

Yes
No
Required
Are you on an emotional win/lose roller coaster?

When something doesn't go right, you're stuck, paralyzed and it's a blow to your ego.  You've made your business all about you and what you have to show for it.  Every time you make a mistake, you feel like a failure.
Yes
No
Required
Do you get attached to your ideas and results?

You find it difficult to let go, to give up control, to trust that anyone else can do as good a job as you.  You work long hours because you can't delegate and you won't ask for help because you're positive you can make everything work out on your own.

Yes
No
Required
Do you keep coming up with moneymaking ideas?

The  grass - or the money - always looks greener on the other side.  You're positive you just have to find the right system.   You  continuously switch from one money making scheme to another when what you're working on doesn't yield an immediate payoff.

Yes
No
Required
Are you crisis-reactive?  Frustrated?

It's exhilarating to run your business by the seat of your pants.  You feel in control, but at the same time you feel that you are out of control and that's frustrating.  Somewhere inside you is a little voice telling you that there's a better, more productive way of doing things and you're almost ready to listen to it.

Yes
No
Required
Do you manage to get yourself through problems?

You spend your day putting out fires so that "to do" list on your desk never gets finished.  You have so many balls in the air that you're constantly juggling priorities.  You'd love a day when you can just do what needs to be done, and do it as well as you can, without interruptions or crises.

Yes
No
Required
Are you driven by revenue/growth?

You're focused on making more money, acquiring more customers, closing more sales and yet, the more you grow, the less money you seem to be making.   You're in the "hustle" when you really want to keep more money in your company - and in your pocket.

Yes
No
Required
Are you always best case/high expectations driven?

Nothing is ever good enough - nothing ever measures up.  You never measure up.  You aren't even sure how much is "enough".  Your goals are so high you never have a chance to feel like a winner, so you just keep driving yourself blindly.

Yes
No
Required
Are you driven by should's, could's and wants?

You're operating by someone else's beliefs, standards and expectations and somewhere deep inside you, you know that these aren't your values.  You'd like to change the way things are, but you also want to please everyone - everyone but you.

Yes
No
Required
Are you reactive?

You're impatient,  judgmental and "small".  Driven by emotion,  you're constantly  feeling "less than" and measuring yourself by what you perceive others are achieving.  On the one hand, you're resentful and on the other hand you beat yourself up as never good enough.  You don't see the bigger picture - the one that is uniquely "you".

Yes
No
Thank you for taking the time to complete this self-assessment.  If you have answered yes to any of these questions then you know where you are "leaking success".

The more questions you answered "yes" to, the more your business is stuck in start-up mode, no matter how long you've been in business.  Moving beyond the start up depends on changing those habits and beliefs that are currently in your way.
