Thank you for your interest in applying to the Pony Patrol program. A limited number of positions are available and volunteers will be chosen by a Selection Committee.

Q1. What is a Pony Patrol volunteer?
A1. Trained volunteers help protect wild horse welfare and visitor safety at Shackleford Banks, Cape Lookout National Seashore and/or Rachel Carson Reserve, N.C. Coastal Reserve. Volunteers accomplish this through maintaining a physical presence at the Park and/or Reserve, educating visitors, and reaching out to law enforcement when necessary.

Q2: Are there any requirements to be a candidate for the Pony Patrol?
A2:  Candidates must be at least 18 years old and a US Citizen / Permanent Resident, and be physically able to walk the beach in a dynamic setting, consisting of sandy terrain, extreme sun, heat, humidity, wind, and buggy environments.

Q3. When will I know if I am selected for a Pony Patrol volunteer position?
A3. Applicants will be notified with a decision in the first part of February 2020. Interviews may be conducted prior to applicants being notified.
 
Q4. Is there a training requirement?
A4. Yes. Selected volunteers are required to attend one of two all-day training sessions in either March or May 2020.
 
Q5. What is the minimum time commitment for volunteers?
A5. Volunteers must commit to 4 4-hour shifts per peak visitation month.
 
Q6. How do volunteers access the islands?
A6. Volunteers will take a ferry to the site(s) or it may be possible for volunteers to use their own vessels.

Q7. What amenities are available on the islands?
A7. Shackleford Banks and the Rachel Carson Reserve are remote islands that offer no visitor amenities such shade or restrooms.
